Isn't it funny that comedy is without question an art form but it's not about being perfect. If anything it's about achieving perfection in talking about imperfections, mistakes, miscues, confusions, bloopers etc... yours and life's in general.
To me it's not really an art about the material so much. If you're an artist painter it is about the painting, the painting is the art. If you're a musician it's about the music; in comedy the art comes into play as it pertains to the messenger/artist (comic) and how he/she presents it which of course influences the impact of the material at hand. The art in comedy is the performer's abilities on display. That's why I have always believed there is no hack material, only hack performers.
It's in these phony presentations that you can tell if someone has truly written his/her own material. It's as plain as a fighter's nose on a face, but the hacks can't grasp that and so continue to steal, 'borrow' or write derivative material thinking it will just blend in if they say the same words (material). It doesn't.
What's the lesson? Work on your material of course, work on yourself even more and start from the VERY beginning....and for god sakes, don't even try to write perfect.
Just be you, that will be perfect.
