Occasionally I see certain young comics and I wonder... what is the point? They don't seem to me like they're having fun and they don't seem to respect the audience they're in front of or the venue they're in. And so I have to wonder, what is the point?
Are they just doing it because it's an excuse to meet with friends, tell dirty jokes, get some attention and drink? Has open mic replaced being in a bowling league or going to strip joints?! Is that the point? If it is I find that disrespectful of the art form I've given a life to, so excuse me if I grumble somewhat sometimes. And if you're a young open mic'er comic and don't like me grumbling don't try to bust my balls, that just makes me laugh. When you've endured Bill Hicks bustin your comedy chops do you REALLY think you got something to say to me?!
Of course in fairness to the young talents I see TOO many venues (even those booked by agencies) disrespecting the comics and the show by not offering the slightest price break on food or beverages and not even a bit of promotion or encouragement; the staff at many venues is no better by acting detached from the show in as much they make unnecessary noise, talk loudly to friends and during the week tell inquisitive customers that they don't know anything about the comedy show. And so I wonder, WHAT is the point?!
How about this...perhaps comedy survives despite poor efforts on everybody's part? The comedy I know is just that powerful. Perhaps our need and willingness to laugh hits it out of the park no matter how bad the pitch is?? I hope, because I see comedy being given SO many bad pitches lately....maybe that's the point, I'm just trying to figure it out.
