Back to basics. I'm a fan of a good foundation. That's what basics are for the most part. They're especially needed in stand up comedy. Knowledge of the basics are the seeds and the roots of writing, perhaps even more so for stand up. And of course roots and seeds can be under appreciated because for awhile they remain unseen. The pace of our society is to work fast and get results. My thinking is that basics ARE a fast way to results.
In stand up comedy you are required to build an act, which means you should be constantly seeking ways to build and expand your knowledge of the art of writing jokes that can make people laugh. Simple huh?
It seems TOO simple actually but a LOT goes into it no question. Much more than the old cliche, 'stage time will fix everything'. I beg to differ. It should read 'smart use of stage time will fix everything'. The stage is like the testing range, you need to do some lab work before taking most things to the testing range correct?
So the next time an ol' stand up comedy coach (like myself for instance) begins a session about setup/punch line, try not to fall asleep. It's going to be like a creative roller coaster that has a slow start and then light bulbs are going to start popping on.
Setup &Punch line. Salt & pepper. Then we season to taste. :)
Dojo funny IS funny and is aimed at building and growing roots....basically.
