_I am not an authority of comedy, I am a worshiper of comedy.
__I'm not teaching comedy, I'm coaching comedians.
_I'm not an intellectual, I'm at best an emotional-lectual. (I think I made that word up)
_I'm not an all knowing professor of stand up, I am forever a student of stand up. There's an old saying 'You teach you learn', I'm living proof of that truth and I depend on it.
_I am not trying to 'cash in' on newbies to sell them snake oil of how to's of stand up comedy. I am doing what I have been asked to do and what my spirit has willed me to do for others since my beginnings of comedy decades ago. I'm simply helping other funny talented people and thereby serving laughter.
_I'm not a judgmental old dinosaur when it comes to stand up and comedy writing. Sensing really great comedy has limitless paths and not just formulas, I have forever appreciated the fresh approach. I know enough to look for it at least. I have had the priviledge of witnessing many breakthoughs and taking part in assisting some 'out there' famous talents.
One of the exciting aspects of comedy is newness and surprise. Why would anybody want to think they have a lock on that? It would negate the very childlike spirit you must have to create anything, period, ...ever.
*So what can YOU get out of this 'I'm not' thing? Try writing a few about yourself, use it as an exercise, write a 100 of them. I bet you get some funny personal material out of it.
What seems to be a negative can be very positive. bam!
See what I did there? Told you I'm not an intellectual. ;)
