A FEW WORDS ABOUT WRITING COMEDY

You know when I write comedy I very seldom think of words? Words are important no question but only in the final process of translation. As a matter of fact ALWAYS be prepared to remove words. It's been my opinion for some time that new writers add words, experienced writers find ways to eliminate words. Even more so in comedy. USE ONLY THE WORDS NECESSARY. When I want to conjure comedy I often think of scenes that actually happened or could have happened. I get a feel for the emotions as I tend to come from a vulnerable side. I think it's funny when bad things happen to me and I like to explore that side of all of us. In my stand up ME usually means US. What happens when awkward confusing things happen to me? More than likely the very same things have happened to all of us. How do I/we react? That's the funny stuff that ends with a punch line. I like to play the 'What if' game also and take a long look at comedy confusion as well as anger brings. Things that make you angry are often seeds for laughs. Subdued pain can be funny. A formula for flushing out funny ideas from a topic would be to put an IMAGE down on paper or screen of topic...then begin to write everything down in short bullet point bursts that topic -IMAGE brings to your mind. It might bring a particular song to mind, a feeling/emotion, a pop culture reference, a smell, another pain you had forgotten you were going thru at the time, etc....remember you're looking for the little things.....because, you've heard that the devil is in the details?? So's comedy. Now go write some comedy...but keep it short and emotional ;0 ------------------------- *If
