LETTERMAN'S TOP 10 LIST. FUNNY AND A GOOD WRITING EXERCISE

.I'm sure you're all familiar with David Letterman's Top 10 list. It's been a TV late night comedy benchmark for nearly 30 yrs....classic funny no question. As many times that I've seen it and laughed hard at some of the list I've always got off knowing the real genius is in the simplicity of it. His writers simply put a pop culture phrase, news story, or celebrity etc at the top and write 10 short funny sentences about it all, one attempting to top the other. So easy to write so easy to follow by the audience...so brilliant so simple. And bingo!... such a great writing exercise for you to take advantage of by using this very formula to dig into a subject and find the funny in it. Try it! Use one of your subjects and make a top 10 list out of it. Stay on topic and write 10 different funny things about it. I'm bettin' you come up with something! It can be kinda like doodling...fits in a little notebook or on a pc or phone file real easy! Just sayin'. I'm guessin' this will be in the Top 10 writing suggestions you get today anyway! ;) |

Steve Jobs once said that creativity is simply the ability to connect things. He went on to say that creative people have the ability to connect experiences they've had to synthesize new things. Creating comedy is the exactly the same. Comedy writers connect personal experiences to almost all things and then make a twist or trap door the audience with a punch line creating an entirely new thing. Funny people possess the ability to set the audience up by seemingly going down a familiar path and then bam!.. corrupt that path into a water slide! ~ William Plomer said that 'Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected'. That makes for a great joke writing exercise.... *Write down 2 unconnected things and then find a connection however slim. Remember to think funny. I'm bettin' you write something hilarious! ;) Let me know how it works for you! |
